Ways to Survive Night Shift for Nursing Students

Ways to Survive Night Shift for Nursing Students

Working at night shifts can be challenging. It is linked to numerous health issues including increased metabolic problems, heart disease, gastrointestinal difficulties, obesity, and more. A lot of people are required to work on a night shift, but there are several coping strategies to stay healthy.

  • Observe consistent sleeping patterns
Some students at LPN schools in Chicago can adhere to a night shift schedule without problems, but other students experience fatigue and sleep deprivation. To get maximum sleep in the morning, try to set a sleeping schedule, and stay away from activities that make you feel more alert. Make sure your bedroom is at a comfortable temperature and inform your family about your schedule to avoid disturbance.
  • Minimize light exposure
Light exposure triggers chemical events in the body and affects sleep and wake cycles. Try to control your exposure to light by using blackout blinds, wearing sunglasses on your way home, and avoiding screen exposure before sleeping to get the amount of sleep you need. Enrolling at CNA programs in Illinois may require extended night shifts, but following these basic steps will help you get a good rest.
  • Be mindful of your diet
Night shifts can negatively affect your metabolism and lack of sleep may result in loss of appetite. When assigned to a night shift schedule, make sure to choose foods that are easy to digest, steer clear of sugary foods, and snack on fruits and vegetables.
