A practical nurse is without a doubt one of the most rewarding jobs anyone can do. As a practical nurse, your job is to help improve the quality of life of your patients. You’re there to administer basic care, while also helping them get dressed, bathe, eat food, and more. This is an important job and it requires several prerequisites.
Here are some of the things you will need in order to become a practical nurse:
- High School Diploma
One of the first requirements for practical nursing is a high school diploma. However, a GED would also count.
- Prerequisite Classes
You will need to take several classes before you are able to undergo healthcare training in Illinois. Some of the courses you will need to complete are physiology, biology, anatomy, microbiology, English, and more. These are classes you can take in any college. It is also important to know that you have 7 years from the time you have taken the classes to enroll in an LPN program.
- CNA Certification
One of the main requirements to become an LPN is to have a certified nursing assistant certification. This is a course that can take around six months to complete. At the end of the course, you will be required to take an exam and if you pass, you will earn your certification.
- Entrance Exam
Once you have your CNA certification, you can move on and begin the LPN entrance exam. This is an exam that will test you on your academic skills such as reading, mathematics, English, and science. It is timed, so it is important to study beforehand.
- Becoming a Nurse
When you enter the LPN program, you will have two options. You can go for a diploma, which means you will only be able to work as a licensed practical nurse or you can go for a degree, which will help you become a registered nurse in the future.
Those are just a few of the many things to consider when you are interested in becoming a practical nurse.
